ABSTRACT

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) is an autoimmune disease characterized by the destruction of pancreatic beta cells, resulting in insufficient insulin production and the need for daily hormone replacement. In this context, stem cell-based therapies have been investigated as alternatives for the replacement or preservation of beta-cell function and glycemic control. This study aimed to analyze the evidence on the use of stem cells and cell therapies in the treatment of T1DM. An integrative literature review was conducted through searches in the PubMed and SciELO databases, using the terms “Diabetes mellitus type 1,” “stem cells,” and “cell therapy,” combined with the Boolean operator AND. Clinical intervention studies published between September 2020 and September 2026, conducted in humans, in English, with full-text availability, and directly evaluating cell therapies for T1DM were considered. Five studies were included. The results demonstrated promising effects of different strategies, particularly in improving beta-cell function and reducing insulin requirements in some patients. However, limitations were identified, including small sample sizes, short follow-up periods, the need for immunosuppression in some strategies, and the occurrence of adverse events. It is concluded that cell therapies show promising potential for the treatment of T1DM, but further studies with larger populations and longer follow-up periods are needed to confirm their efficacy and safety.
