ABSTRACT

Considering the complexity and diversity of the clinical manifestations of autoimmune diseases, such as multiple sclerosis (MS), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and psoriasis, exploring complementary therapeutic strategies are essential to alleviate symptoms, control musculoskeletal manifestations, and promote patient well-being. Several studies have investigated the complementary use of botulinum toxin type A for its potential to provide symptomatic relief, improve muscle function, and contribute to the quality of life of patients affected by these conditions. It acts by blocking the release of acetylcholine at peripheral nerve terminals, thereby reducing excessive muscle activity and, in some cases, attenuating inflammatory processes or symptoms associated with the clinical manifestations of these disorders. Therefore, the aim of this study was to discuss the effectiveness of botulinum toxin type A as a complementary therapeutic resource in selected autoimmune diseases, including MS, RA, SLE, and psoriasis. A literature review was conducted between March and November 2025, considering articles published in the past twenty years in the Google Scholar and PubMed databases, in both Portuguese and English. Despite requiring an individualized and cautious approach, the therapeutic use of botulinum toxin has proven to be safe when administered by trained professionals familiar with its specific contraindications. Its low toxicity profile and localized effects make it a promising tool for expanding complementary approaches in the treatment of autoimmune conditions, particularly in the context of chronic pain, motor control, and overall patient well-being.
